Our History

In 2016, a crew of individuals served and a staff member started turning used furniture into beautiful, refurbished pieces. With only a few hours a week dedicated to the woodshop, the crew was able to showcase these pieces at the Employment Connections Annual Benefit Sale. The crew received an overwhelming response to the custom pieces, and from that success, Custom Creations was born. More individuals with disabilities were hired for a few hours per week to work in the shop, continuing this effort. As inventory grew, an online catalog was created for buyers to window shop. Over 150 pieces were sold, and there was a dream for something bigger.

In 2021, Custom Creations started the journey to turn a dream into reality with the purchase of a storefront at 1107 Main Street in Hays. This created a more accessible location for the public to view furniture and other creations. It also promotes community awareness and inclusion so others can learn about what both DSNWK and Custom Creations do, and the people we serve.

Individuals with disabilities across all 18 counties of DSNWK's service area have the opportunity to create, contribute to, and participate in an array of projects for the new store.

Custom Creations is accepting donations of furniture and craft supplies. They are looking for real wood furniture for the talented crew to turn into beautifully restored pieces. All donations are used to benefit people with disabilities. To make a donations, please call Employment Connections at 785-625-2018.
